Do you wave the skip lorry goodbye as it disappears down the road with your waste building materials? If so, stop and think again, because a lot of your costs and profits are disappearing with it! With waste skips costing around £160, and according to CIRIA, containing on average £1200 worth of material, it’s not difficult to realise that the industry needs to change its ideas on how it manages its materials and waste.
Over 400 million tons of building waste is being sent by the industry to landfill every year. This is not sustainable and the Industry needs to change the way it operates with better management and handling of materials to reduce the impact that site waste is having on the environment.
This has led to the Government introducing several initiatives and regulations in an effort to make the industry more aware of the need for sustainable management. On April 6th it will be mandatory for all construction projects with a value of over £300,000 to have a Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP). SWMP’s are intended to provide a logical structure for waste management at a particular site. Although currently not mandatory below this figure their use will assist smaller projects manage their resources, reduce waste and the overall cost of the project.
So why not use our mini crushers to recycle as much waste rubble and concrete on site as possible; An economical and simple way to demonstrate that you are complying with this new legislation.
With a daily hire rate equivalent to the hire of one skip but capable of processing a skip load of material in an hour, the economics of using our mini crushers soon stack up. Savings made include reduced disposal costs (no landfill tax!!), reduced import of fresh aggregate (No aggregate Tax!) and reduced transport costs. All these savings will add to your profit and be good for the environment as well. In fact you could save over £1000 a day by hiring our mini crushers instead of hiring skips to dispose of your waste and then importing fresh aggregate.
Tax changes for 2008
From April 1st 2008 the Aggregate levy on fresh Aggregate has been increased. Therefore for every tonne of Aggregate you order £2 is paid in tax to the government.
From April 1st 2008 Landfill tax has increased. On general waste tax has gone up to £32 per tonne and £2.50 per tonne for inert waste. So for every tonne of building materials you recycle on site using a mini crusher you save £4.50 in tax alone.
Why it makes sense to hire a Mini Crusher – Costing examples
Below shows examples of savings that can be achieved by hiring a mini cruhser as opposed to a skip. Our tables show cost comparisons based on using a 7 ton skip for waste disposal. At the time of writing costings for skips and aggregate were taken from local sources.
Table 1 shows the cost of disposing waste rubble and concrete via a skip and importing fresh aggregate from a quarry.
